Understanding feedback in online learning – A critical review and metaphor analysis

Technologies associated with online learning have led to many new feedback practices and expanded the meaning of beyond traditional focus on instructor comments, but conceptual work has not followed. This paper investigates how researchers understand feedback's role in teaching learning, discusses these understandings influence what research questions are asked, recommended. Through a qualitative analysis language used about leading journals, we identified six distinct based dominant metaphors. These is treatment, costly commodity, coaching, command, dialogue, learner tool. Each metaphors offers coherent frame entailments related roles responsibilities instructors learners as well some bigger assumptions should play learning. A comparison current revealed that just two align learner-centric increasingly considered appropriate among researchers. The conceptualizations might reflect different challenges facing education. proposes interrogate their own ensure they beliefs its process. It suggests more deliberate use when conceptualizing necessary for clarity communication helpful driving forward.
